Interfaith Dialogue Progresses in Western Kosovo: A Beacon of Peace Amidst Political Complexity

In an extraordinary display of religious solidarity, the Commander of the KFOR Regional Command West, Italian Colonel Mario Bozzi, hosted an interfaith gathering at the Villagio Italia KFOR base near Peć/Peja on May 4, 2023. The meeting gathered representatives from all major religious communities in the western part of Kosovo, underscoring the region's commitment to fostering a spirit of tolerance and unity in these politically complex times.

The gathering was graced by leaders from the Islamic Community, Catholic Church, Serbian Orthodox Church, Tariqat/Bektashi Community, and Jewish Community. It was a congregation that not only showcased the diverse religious fabric of Kosovo but also emphasized the commonalities between them.

In a climate of mutual respect and open dialogue, religious representatives articulated the significance of coexistence, the value of understanding our diverse traditions, and the necessity of nurturing a spirit of tolerance and peace. The Islamic community was represented by the heads of IC from Peć/Peja, Istok/Istog, Decan/Dečani, Gjakova/Djakovica, and Prizren. The Bektashi/Tariqat community was embodied by the Sheikh from Gjakova/Djakovica and a delegate from Junik. Serbian Orthodox Church was represented by the Abbot of the Dečani Monastery, Fr. Sava, and his associates, Fr. Petar and Fr. Atanasije. The venerable Mother Haritina, the 85 old Abbess of the ancient Peć Patriarchate Monastery (SOC), and Sister Melania lent further gravitas to the proceedings. In front of the Catholic Church priests from Peć/Peja, Gjakova/Djakovica and Prizren honoured the gathering.

Further bolstering the interfaith dialogue were the KFOR Chaplain, Don Filippo and his Croatian colleague Don Danko, and a contingent of KFOR officers from Italy, Turkey and Albania the soldiers of which participate in the Regional Command West KFOR peacekeeping mission. The meeting culminated in a convivial lunch hosted by Colonel Bozzi, symbolizing camaraderie and unity beyond religious affiliations. The participants of the gathering expressed sincere gratitude to Colonel Bozzi for hosting this event. Religious representatives often visit each other, especially on major feast days and maintain informal contacts thanks to years of acquaintance.

This extraordinary assembly underscored that diverse communities in Kosovo, irrespective of their ethnic or religious backgrounds, can coexist peacefully and foster traditionally strong relations. While unique in our traditions, we stand united in sharing many values as followers of the Abrahamic religions. During numerous past interfaith gatherings in Kosovo, it was underscored that the 1999 conflict in the region did not have religious roots. It was also emphasized that each faith can make a significant contribution towards fostering a culture of tolerance and respect for diverse traditions, which are viewed as a societal asset rather than a burden.

Amidst the complex political landscape in which Kosovo and the region currently find themselves, this meeting sent a powerful message. By actively fostering positive relations between religious communities, a significant contribution can be made towards peace and stability in Kosovo. The successful interfaith meeting served as a beacon of hope, illuminating the potential for harmony and cooperation amidst diversity.

Religious Representatives in Kosovo

It is with great joy and gratitude that my fellow monks and I participate in this gathering, and we would like to extend our special thanks to Colonel Bozzi for his warm hospitality. As religious representatives in Kosovo, we recognize the importance of fostering cooperation and good relations among the various faiths present in our diverse community. This is particularly essential for the future of all, especially the younger generations who will inherit the legacy we leave behind.

Devoting our lives to serving God, as followers of the Abrahamic tradition, we understand that the essence of our service lies in recognizing the image of God in our neighbors, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. In doing so, we acknowledge the interconnectedness of all humanity and the shared values that unite us.

In promoting religious tolerance, we embrace an open and friendly attitude that respects the different traditions and beliefs that coexist within our society. By engaging in dialogue and mutual understanding, we create a harmonious environment in which our communities can thrive and flourish.

Above all, the moral and human values that our religions embody should guide our actions and interactions with one another. These values include compassion, love, forgiveness, and justice, which form the foundation of peaceful coexistence and social cohesion.

As religious representatives, we have a unique opportunity to be agents of positive change and to set an example for our followers. By working together, we can dispel misconceptions, break down barriers, and create a shared vision of unity and harmony for Kosovo. This collaborative approach not only fosters a greater understanding of our respective beliefs but also strengthens the bonds between our communities.

In conclusion, let us continue to prioritize cooperation and good relations among religious representatives in Kosovo. By doing so, we contribute to a brighter future for all, imbued with tolerance, respect, and the shared values that unite us in our common humanity.

Rëndësia e Bashkëpunimit dhe Marrëdhënieve të Mirë

Ndër përfaqësuesit Fetarë në Kosovë

Me kënaqësi dhe mirënjohje të madhe, ne, murgjtë e mi dhe unë, marrim pjesë në këtë tubim, dhe do të donim të shprehim falënderimet tona të veçanta për kolonel Bozzi për mikpritjen e ngrohtë. Si përfaqësues fetarë në Kosovë, ne e kuptojmë rëndësinë e nxitjes së bashkëpunimit dhe marrëdhënieve të mirë ndërmjet besimeve të ndryshme që janë të pranishme në komunitetin tonë të larmishëm. Kjo është veçanërisht thelbësore për të ardhmen e të gjithëve, sidomos për brezat e rinj që do të trashëgojnë trashëgiminë që ne lëmë pas.

Duke iu kushtuar jetës sonë për të shërbyer Perëndisë, si ndjekës të traditës abrahamike, ne kuptojmë se thelbi i shërbimit tonë qëndron në njohjen e imazhit të Perëndisë te fqinjët tanë, pa marrë parasysh etninë apo fenë e tyre. Duke vepruar kështu, ne njohim ndërvarësinë e të gjithë njerëzimit dhe vlerat e përbashkëta që na bashkojnë.

Në promovimin e tolerancës fetare, ne përqafojmë një qëndrim të hapur dhe miqësor që respekton traditat dhe besimet e ndryshme që bashkëjetojnë brenda shoqërisë sonë. Duke u angazhuar në dialog dhe ndërkuptim reciprok, ne krijojmë një ambient harmonik në të cilin komunitetet tona mund të rriten dhe të lulëzojnë.

Mbi të gjitha, vlerat morale dhe njerëzore që fenë tona përfaqësojnë duhet të udhëhoqin veprimet dhe ndërveprimet tona ndërmjet njëri-tjetrit. Këto vlera përfshijnë dhembshurinë, dashurinë, faljen dhe drejtësinë, të cilat përbëjnë bazën e bashkëjetesës paqësore dhe kohezionit shoqëror.

Si përfaqësues fetarë, ne kemi një mundësi unike për të qenë agjentë të ndryshimit pozitiv dhe për të shërbyer si shembull për ndjekësit tanë. Duke punuar së bashku, ne mund të shpërndajmë keqkuptimet, të përmbysim barrierat dhe të krijojmë një vizion të përbashkët të unitetit dhe harmonisë për Kosovën. Kjo qasje e bashkëpunimit jo vetëm që nxit një kuptim më të madh të besimeve tona përkatëse, por gjithashtu forcon lidhjet ndërmjet komuniteteve tona.

Për të përfunduar, le të vazhdojmë të japim përparësi bashkëpunimit dhe marrëdhënieve të mirë ndërmjet përfaqësuesve fetarë në Kosovë. Duke vepruar kështu, ne ndihmojmë për një të ardhme më të ndritur për të gjithë, të ngarkuar me tolerancë, respekt dhe vlerat e përbashkëta që na bashkojnë në njerëzimin tonë të përbashkët.

Важност сарадње и добрих односа међу верским представницима на Косову

С великом радошћу и захвалношћу моја сабраћа монаси и ја учествујемо на овом скупу, и желимо да се посебно захвалимо пуковнику Боцију за његово топло гостопримство. Као верски представници на Косову, видимо важност развијања сарадње и добрих односа међу различитим верама у друштву у коме постоје различитости. Ово је посебно важно за будућност свих, посебно млађих генерација које ће наследити оно што им остављамо.

Посвећујући наше животе служењу Богу као следбеници авраамовског предања, разумемо да суштина нашег служења лежи у у томе да препознамо лик Божјији у нашим ближњима, без обзира на њихову националност или вероисповест. Тиме признајемо међусобну повезаност свих људи и заједничке вредности које нас спајају.

Подстичући верску толеранцију, прихватамо отворен и пријатељски однос поштовања према различитим традицијама и верама које постоје у друштву у коме живимо. У међусобном дијалогу и разумевању, стварамо складнију средину у којој наше заједнице могу напредовати и развијати се.

Пре свега, моралне и људске вредности које наше религије поштују, треба да нас усмеравају у нашим деловању и односима једних према другима. Те вредности укључују саосећање, љубав, опроштај и правду, и чине основу мирног саживота и повезаности у друштву.

Као верски представници, имамо јединствену прилику да будемо делатници позитивних промена и да дамо пример својим следбеницима. Радећи заједно, можемо лакше да превазилазимо предрасуде, уклањамо препреке и градимо једну заједничку визију јединства и мира на Косову. Овај пут сарадње не само да стимулише боље разумевање између наших вероисповести, већ и јача везе између наших заједница.

На крају бих желео да кажем да треба да наставимо да посвећујемо важност сарадњи и добрим односима међу верским представницима на Косову. Тиме доприносимо светлијој будућности за све, у којој ће владати толеранција, поштовањее и заједничке вредности које нас повезују у свести да треба да будемо и останемо пре свега људи.
